DVD - Akira Remix Year - 1988 Director - Katsuhiro Otomo Length - 125 Min. Language - ORIGINAL ENGLISH DUB RIPPED FROM VHS Subs - None Video - 16x9 VIDEO RIPPED FROM PIONEER SPECIAL EDITION DVD Format - NTSC In short, here's what I did: 1)Ripped the original Akira DVD (Pioneer Special Edition) to the HDD using VideoReDo. 2)Converted the VOB files to a high quality MPEG-2 file using VideoReDo. 3)Split the audio and video into elementary streams using TMPGenc. 4)Ripped the VHS to the HDD using a Dazzle DVC-100 Capture Card. 5)Converted the VOB files to a MPEG-2 file using VideoReDo. 6)MANUALLY cut and synched the DVD video file to the VHS file by splicing out non-key frames of audio from the VHS. 7)Split the VHS file into audio and video elementary streams. 8)Cut the audio for the credits from the DVD and merged it with the VHS audio to make the audio file the same length as the DVD file using Goldwave, implementing a noise reduction, normalizing, and pop/hiss filter for a cleaner sound. 9)Converted the newly formed VHS WAV file to an MP2 file at 384 kbps (For some stupid reason, WAV files can't be remuxed). 10)Muxed the DVD Video file with the VHS audio file. 11)Created logical chapter stops using Nero Vision 4, compressed to fit DVD-5 ISO Standard (don't worry; it wasn't much difference). 12)Burned to DVD 13)Verified DVD integrity, squealed like a schoolgirl. ;) 14)Created image using ImgBurn. 15)Shared my creation with the world. No menus, No frills - If anyone wants to add that stuff, they're on their own. Personally, I'll probably remix the VHS WAV file into a 5 channel ac-3 file when I have the time, add a menu, probably the Akira production report and burn it to a dual layer dvd. Once I do that (If I do that; this took long enough!), I'll upload it. Until then, cheers!
I have been trying to do this for a long time... but I failed, the sound would always
get unsynched for some obscure reason (tried doing it in several different ways).
I also tried doing it with a 720p HDTV version of the movie.
I have the original english dubbed Akira on DVD.
What you've done sounds great, but the quality can't be extremely good.
It would be more awesome though, if you would do it with the 720p version + better quality audio.
If you want to, I can upload the sound from original Eng Dub DVD (either in .AC3 or .WAV) in a torrent, for you to use...
Here's the HDTV Akira: http://isohunt.com/torrent_details/29416103/Akira+720p?tab=summary
One *should* be able to just convert the audio to .aac (inside an .mp4 container),
then use mkvextract and mkvmerge to just insert that in the .mkv along with the video,
or extract the video from the .mkv and insert both the audio and video in an .mp4 container using YAMB.
I've tried that... didn't work though, got unsynched audio. I tried delaying the audio,
messing with the FPS and the interleaving, but nothing seemed to help.
You could probably get it to work somehow...
But it would be best to not re-encode it, since the HDTV encode is already in a perfect H.264 file and all...
it would be so awesome if one could just replace the audio somehow without touching the video.
You know, the original English dub is available on the Australian DVD. Just get that.

whether I get a copy or not bless you for doing all the work.
If this is really what it states, you are to be commended. Beats my old vhs to dvd transfer I did just for the dub...thanks
